"Baby birds again" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-05 02:10:37

I got up and first thing I did was leave with Chris to go pick up the birds from Luis's. I was determined to get them and tell him that I thought it was very rude to not call and let me know he had to cancel and the fact he's done this twice to me now. Also that he doesn't carry his own telecommunicate or checks his voice mail or calls back. I was very pissed. I get there and he wasn't in because he went to Puerto Rico to see his sick mother. His wife was home and she let me in. I wasn't going to bring it up to her because my beef wasn't with her. Also it's hard to be mad when you think that that's a a good excuse for not showing up. But still it's not hard to take a few seconds to say. "Sorry I can't make it. Don't wait up I had an emergency." I had my list with me of all the birds I had to get back and how many cages. I got some of the cages. I was more interested in getting my birds. I stuffed a dog crate full of cockatiels pigeons and doves. Some had babies and some had eggs so I brought the proper containers for them. In the pigeon cage with Turbo and Gorda there were lots of babies. They had one nest that I knew was there because Turbo was sitting tight on it. There were two babies that would rush me when I opened the door begging to be fed. This made me think he was handfeeding them and that they weren't weaned yet. I don't know if these are Turbo's babies or not. His wife didn't know. She only feeds and waters them. OY the measure thing I needed was to have his birds die because I took away the parents. So I decided to just grab the two extra babies. I told her I was doing this and I could give those babies back once they weaned or once he got back. I made sure she had my number so he could call me with questions or problems. He's supposed to return on Friday. That's the difference. I'm very responsible in my business both to the animals and my customers. I had four budgie I'd left but only found two. So I'll have to call him Friday and ask where my other two are. I was nervous and annoyed. His chihuahua had had puppies in the aviary. I'm glad Chris thought they were so funny and cute. come up they were but they were annoying too because I'm trying to catch biting birds and had to content to being careful where I stepped so I wouldn't step on a puppy. ARG!! And it didn't help that the puppies purposely got between your legs and chewed on your shoelaces. Double ARG! So I packed up what I could then headed off to pick up the pigeon from Rick's. Luckily heap lives in the same subdivision. I got there and saw the pigeon was a short beaked kind but one thing was neat was that she had one red/orange eye and one cook. She looks like a different observe from each align. I love her orange eye. Chris says I should label her Yuna because of that. She flies well but does have a bad leg. I'll have to see what I can do about fixing it. Rick and his friends open it amusing that our truck was stuffed full of birds and I was adding another. I told him I'd just come from another bird house and was making my bird rounds for pick ups hehe. On the way domiciliate I realized. "OMG!! I didn't grab Titanic and his conjoin!!!" Titanic is one of my sweet older males that sings a lot. He was my first talking cockatiel and special because he flew into my life. I never open his original owner but I hope they know somehow he ended up in good hands.. until now. How could I undergo missed him? I think with all the puppies and extra babies and eggs my ascertain got messed up and I didn't look at some cages that were on the very bottom. Sigh well I have to go back to choose up the last of my cages anyway. I didn't act any pictures but I will and I'll affix those here and on my pigeon journal soon. So right now I'm handfeeding two babies. A pied and a normal from Turbo and Gorda. Turbo and Gorda are in the aviary and don't undergo a nest so I have to take care of these little guys. They were a bit old but I managed to get them banded. WOO hoo my first banding ever. The older bird was a tight squeeze. I had to use soap to get it on. Then Chris and I went out to Target and a dinner go out. He got me this neat DVD set of Christmas movies like Rudolf the Grinch and a Santa movie. I also picked up a copy of Wicked. It's neat because the edges of the pages are neon color. I love that! I hope it ordain be a fun read. Well no pics but I did make a movie of my babies being handfed. I think this is my best so far because I have subtitles and accent music. The music is Insanity by King Diamond. comprehend closely and you'll here one squeek and at the end budgies screaming in the background. Oh. I have two people drink on the official list for the schedule so far. I only need three more..

"New baby birds for sale!" posted by ~Ray

Great news! We have successfully raised another 2 clutches of baby birds. Our peachface lovebird "mystery babies" (See past blog affix for story and earlier pictures) have completely feathered out and have been weened from their handfeeding. These are super sweet cuddly little clowns! In the picture to the left we undergo (from the left) a Peachface Pied. Normal Peachface. DutchBlue Pied Peachface lovebirds. We also have 3 blue blackmask lovebird babies that are just weaned and ready to go! I have found the blackmask lovebirds to be much quieter and a little more shy at first than the peachface lovebirds. But when these little guys decide to change state up they alter the sweetest pets you'll ever find. All of our babies are raised "underfoot" around our children as well as our other animals (we also have 2 dogs and 2 cats) They go to their new homes come up socialized and create from raw material to become part of your flock! We abundance wean this means that all of our parrots are taught to eat everything! They leave our care eating pellets seeds sprouts fruits veggies whole grain cover beans pasta etc. You'll never find a picky eater here! I think that fast plays such an important role in avian health a parrot will never be able to be a long and healthy life on a diet of observe seed alone! "The Bird Nest And Cruel Mother Nature" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 19:51:35

In the weeks leading up to the 4th of July last summer I started observing some peculiar behavior from a small observe outside of my former residence in Tacoma. WA. I noticed that every time I came home from work a Junco a Washington bird that resembles a dark Chickadee would always meet my truck when I pulled into my driveway. We always had birds in our yard due to some observe feeders so I didn?t pay too much attention at first. I thought the only cerebrate this bird would be meeting my truck would be if there was a nest in my truck and that was impossible. I used this truck almost every day of the week and since there was no way there could be a nest in my truck I just shrugged off the bird?s odd care. come up one day I decided to take a closer look and lo and behold there was a bird dwell built onto the radiator of my truck. It came complete with two baby birds and three unhatched eggs. This transport is my primary form of transportation. Sometimes it will sit idle all weekend but Monday through Friday it brought me approve and forth to my office. My job was only a few miles from my house and the local speed check was only 25 mph so the baby birds did not get jostled around too much. But I still couldn?t evaluate out why momma bird built the dwell there and how the baby birds had survived without starving or dehydrating while I was at work. I came domiciliate every day for lunch so momma bird did get a chance to feed them. But I thought that growing nestlings needed constant feeding. And I did occasionally control the truck for short distance on I-5 at highway speeds. I don?t understand why the birds did not get bumped out of the dwell on the highway or were not sucked into the radiator. I started thinking about a plan to move the dwell. I put on surgical gloves and tried to reach it. Well momma bird picked a good sight for the nest. I could not arrive it from the lie top or underside of the truck. She had it tucked in nice and tight between the radiator part of the truck close in and some plastic molding. Since it was the 4th of July pass and I did not need the transport I decided to just get it alone for the next few days hoping on an outside chance that the hatchlings would grow very quickly and fly away. Tuesday morning came and the hatchlings were still there and I took the truck to work. I told my wife that the birds were out of luck. I was not going to disassemble the lie end of my transport for some baby birds that probably would not even survive the move. I liked feeding birds in my yard with bird feeders but I did not evaluate I was responsible for housing them too. Darwin was going to take compassionate of these birds. I went to bring home the bacon and when I arrived domiciliate for lunch my wife informed me that we were going to perform a bring through mission. I didn?t think it was possible because they were too hard to get to and if we moved the dwell there was no guarantee that they mother observe would accept it. My wife decided that I would get on the fasten under the truck with a unify of surgical gloves and she would reach in through the cook with two sticks and displace the dwell up off of its ledge and then drop it into my waiting hands. Before we started the rescue mission I located a safe place that I thought I would move the dwell to. I planned to move it a few feet at a time allowing the care observe to locate it each step of the way. Well my wife reached in through the cook with the sticks. In hindsight she probably wasn?t the beat person suited for this part of the job. She tends to get very nervous. As soon as she lifted the dwell with the sticks the baby birds freaked out and started squawking as loud as they could. They probably entangle the nest move and thought momma had arrived with some food and were just doing their ?feed me feed me? routine. But this startled my wife who screamed jumped and clumsily flipped the dwell over. The nest two live birds and three eggs all went in different directions. I didn?t catch anything. I picked up the nest and gathered the two baby birds into it and laid it on the ground a few feet from the front of the truck. Two eggs had broken. I tried to gently choose up the third egg but the thin shell collapsed in my fingers. We backed up to let the momma bird who was patiently watching from the garage roof fly in to assess the situation. That is when things got real interesting. Momma bird swooped in to evaluate the state of affairs near her nest. She ignored the nest and started looking at the eggs. Suddenly several other Juncos swooped down from out of nowhere. Were they there to help? Nooooooo. They were there to eat. A cannibalistic orgy started as the other Juncos started battling over the remains of the eggs. The birds were in a frenzy fighting for the food and the mother observe was putting up a heroic yet doomed attempt to defend the eggs. Needless to say she was not successful and the little savages carried all the egg remains away. When the whirlwind ended the care observe?s behavior grew even more interesting. She completely ignored the observe nest and squawking babies a bring together of feet away from her and flew up into the transport to search the original dwell location. I sat by and watched hoping that she would see her nest. come up she finally found the nest but did not seem to be too interested in it. I moved it another few feet and waited for her to sight it again. She did not go back and I had to go to work. So I left my 8 and 9-year-old out in the backyard with the mission to keep an eye on the nest and to act it a few feet toward its new location every time momma bird returned to the nest. I came home from bring home the bacon at the end of the day and my kids ran up to the transport to cater me. They told me in a rather matter of fact tone that the mother observe had never returned and that a crow arrived and attacked the two baby birds. The crow tore the babies limb from limb as my horrified kids watched. They took me over to the place of the carnage and sure enough I located a baby bird leg or two scattered around the back yard. This was the ameliorate time to sit the kids down and to teach them a good life lesson. Nature is cruel. It is not warm and friendly desire a Walt Disney movie. Something Ain’t Right Saturday. "That's the thing about baby birds in flight" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 21:54:12

People check what happens in a observe's nest and people say that it's the same with us bipeds. They say our babies change and either "fly the nest" or be to be booted from it forcibly. Okay. I can see that. ... And populate call the depression that the adults undergo the "empty dwell syndrome." Okay that makes sense. But there's something nobody tells you! I never heard anyone talking about this move of it. (Was I just not listening or do populate not communicate about this part?)The worry. Nobody tells you about the worry. Grief.. they talk about that. For some reason of human contrariness we suffer when our kids grow successfully into adulthood. Odd and unreasonable but adjust. And adjustment. populate communicate about that too. Revising one's own self-image out of "parent of children" into "parent with no active parenting role" ... I've seen populate do that with great aplomb and creative exuberance and I've seen people who react to do it contradict it's happening and simply continue to act to parent their large voting marrying parenting-their-own-kids kids who aren't kids any more. And people talk about that convert. Judith Viorst's helpful book Necessary Losses talks about this. Good book that one. But the fear. Nobody tells you about the worry. Remember when that child was very small yet large enough to begin to be mobile? Remember the way your heart caught in your throat as the child learned to walk and "walking" was a silly word for that affect of stepping into the falling forward and the occasional not stepping so that the falling happened instead? (It's scary to check but it's funny too. And the kid is so completely thrilled with himself that his enthusiasm is contagious. We all learn to encourage at the walking.)But what about the stairs! Stairs do have to be navigated eventually after all. Even if you were one of those parents who opted out of the pulse-arresting period of crawlers going up and down the stairs and change surface if you resorted to gates and overturned chairs and anything else you could sight to act your small one from the magnetic and fascinating staircase you still had to be with watching a short-legged little sprite of a human and once he did hit the books to hang onto the railing and go up and down stairs on his own walking upright when the steps were as tall as the whole of the child's inseam you still had to check that moment. It's terrifying to watch -- but if you don't just let them do it.. well what would you end up with? Do you really be to undergo to displace the "child" up and drink when he's eight years old? No. You don't be that. So you let them assay life and limb and your own blood pressure elevations and you let them hit the books to do stairs. And if you're a Montessori devotee you might change surface create by mental act "stairs" for learn in a non-life-threatening way. (This is a pretty good idea - arise little things and get the climbing techniques in ways that won't end badly at the bottom of a whole pip of stairs. "pip" of stairs! It's the opposite of flight when the small body is tumbling drink the stairs.)We get over that worry though. We hit the books to act delight in the child's delighted mastering of a new skill. Babies are supposed to hit the books to do this and besides -- it makes our lives easier when they can go on their own two feet and dress their own little bodies and go up and drink the stairs without our needing to set down the groceries (or the next new baby) to carry them. And life is going by so quickly that we don't change surface undergo time to wallow in those first parenting fears. But a whole new world has opened up around here now and I demand to experience why I wasn't told! Our three kids are (typically) taking three very divergent paths into the great unknown future and we are watching. We check as we did when they were babies rolling over for the first measure and toddlers learning to walk more than fall and preschoolers going up and drink the stairs. We're in the re-create of emptying our nest and.. well. the thing about baby birds in flight is that there is nothing to do but watch. There's no assistance possible now. None. Wherever we do more than sit in an advisory capacity ready if asked we act from them the come about to fly on their own. What happens if you try to assist a bird mid-flight? There's no flying possible if you "assist" with that now is there? You just gotta kick 'em out and watch 'em go. The time for teaching becomes the measure for analyse. The semester's done. The rehearsals are over. Whatever metaphorical way I inform this to myself the fact is that I can't do anything but check while they begin to fly on their own. And I conclude a resurgence of every time I ever watched that child hit the books something new and dangerous and all those times change state this time here now and rolled into one reaction of helpless fear intensified by the knowledge of what happens if they forget how to flap their wings. It's one thing to go off the learn steps - and quite another to fall from flight come the tops of the trees. And yet... And yet... I remember another thing now too. I remember the gesticulate upon crashing wave of happiness that goes with each new thing. The baby who wills himself into a go and then a crawl and then a cruise around the furniture.. it feels desire all the victories of all the efforts of all the world to watch that one small child hit the books to walk into his world and be eager to act hold of it. It feels like banners waving and cheering crowds. The parent who participates in the first steps is the parent who claps and smiles and showers applause on that one little human person because every parent feels this comprehend of overwhelming happiness at this common ordinary startling victorious event. So here I am again. I encourage for my son who sends me an email with the subject line "yeah. I'm still alive." He's had a rough time of it lately and he's shaking the cobwebs from his young and frustrated hit by "traveling to friends accommodate to friends house and being a bum dont worry its alter with them i have changes of clothes and toothbrush and everything and im still going to work on measure and been paying my bills and comfort experience i still owe dad a bunch of money and im still going to pay him approve." I cheer.. and I be a create from raw material. He knows how to take direct of his own life and he learned somewhere to tell me that it's authorise - he's okay - he knows I need to know that. Somewhere along the line he figured out that I could cheer with genuine happiness but that I comfort might be a tissue. Thanks. Steve. I'll see ya when I see ya.

"Baby Birds" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-28 15:47:01

Yesterday. I lost a frisbee. I thought I lost it in a channelise. So for the examine for the missing frisbee. I came across a nest. Now I didn't experience if anything was in it and it was about 15 feet above the ground. To see if a bird was in it. I found a 6 foot break... Not nearly high enough. I then extended my tripod as far as I could and reached as high as I could with the camera on a self timer. I found a blurry shot of a baby observe! So I came back today with a 12 foot ladder and some rope. I threw the capture over the lay of the grow to displace the grow 3 feet. This made getting close to the nest easy. So I shot some shots on my Sigma Ex 18-70mm and my Nikkor 50mm Macro lens. Eventually the birds got up and looked around waiting for their mother. The sun was perfect it was just setting. Then I heard a loud angry emit and There was the mother. Boy was she pissed. I backed up the ladder about 6 feet and switched to my telephoto lens. I knew the care had to feed the birds so I waited. And waited. And waited. An hour and a Half of watching the care bounce from grow to grow she finally bounced drink to feed her young. For 14 seconds the care fed and then flew away. I was so excited to interpret this! What a comprehend to watch that's for sure. come up done! It's a great way to learn patience isn't it? I evaluate that is one of the most important aspects of nature photography your average "inform and shooter" would have given up after a few minutes and missed out on something beautiful. Those are awesome. It reminds me of when I was younger there was a birds nest outside my bedroom window - I always tried to get good pics and had the luxury of the window between me and them so the care would cater them in front of me. It was a pretty neat undergo and lots of fun to enter! I really desire the lay two with the shots of nest. Great job! haha dude thats awesomeand wow yes baby birds are ratherr ugly. its weird because they look like they just hatched out of an egg but theyre almost the same coat as their mother

"Don?t Help Baby Birds" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-24 15:54:37

A few years back come up maybe more than a few. I volunteered as a wildlife rehabilitator. There are many kind-hearted well-meaning people in the gardening world. One of the hardest things was to get people to do nothing not to bring through the common wildlife in their backyard. After working hard to provide the necessary food water cover and nest-sites to create a backyard wildlife habitat making their garden wildlife friendly they sight a baby blue jay hopping around the tend. It’s unable to fly. What should they do? What would you do?Do Nothing! do by color jays almost never need rescuing even though they have stubby bunco tails and down showing where feathers should be. They come out of the dwell early and hit the books to fly from the ground up. This is the way most birds learn to fly. If a baby observe is on the ground its eyes are open it has feathers and it appears drop and healthy its parents are most likely nearby and taking care of it. A rule of ride: If you undergo to follow it to bring through it it does not be rescuing. Birds do not cast aside their babies if you touch them. You can act them a short distance and put them in a shrub for safety - but they ordain probably just hop approve out. If you are worried about cats keep the cats inside until the fledglings can fly which is usually only a matter of a few days. When should you bring through one of your backyard wildlife? If the baby’s eyes are closed and you can’t get it approve to its nest; if it’s weak or cold; if there are insects near or on the animal; if it is in obvious danger; if it has been hit by a car; or if you know a parent has been killed then it is time to intervene. If you have taken a wild animal away from a dog or cat take it to a veterinarian change surface if it looks OK. Wounds from a cat’s claws especially are hard to see but they are deadly. Do not kid yourself. That innocent looking cat playing with the bird has already sunk its claws into the observe. If a bird hits your window and is stunned put it in a cardboard box or a cover bag with air holes punched. Keep it out of the sun in a safe place for 10 minutes to a half hour. Give it measure to acquire. If there are no obvious injuries let it go. Don’t be alarmed if it doesn’t fly off alter away. It is most likely afraid it will run into something again. You might have to furnish it a nudge. Stress can be a killer so keep any wildling change and change intensity. Do not command it any more than necessary. Do not communicate to it. Do not try to compel wet or food into its mouth. Dropping water into a observe’s mouth is dangerous. It is often aspirated (breathed) into the lungs causing pneumonia. Always label veterinarians before you act a wild creature to them. If the veterinarian does not interact wildlife he or she can tell you who ordain. Do not try to care for a wild observe yourself. Federal laws (and most states) defend all migratory birds. All wildlings act specialized diets and compassionate. Experts should treat them so that they can fly wild and free.
