"The Right Doll at the Right Time or Making the Best of Barbie." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:28:41

I’m writing a series of posts of lists of The Best Toys for Christmas from a Not-Quite-Crunchy perspective. I did measure week. Next week I’ll do dolls…but. I’m going to go away with a little accent today. One of the fun things about blogging is the opportunity to do some research and obtain insight into different issues. This week I spent a bit of time reading expert opinions on doll play the purpose it serves developmentally and what dolls to buy…when. And boy…WHEN seems to be the whole “Barbie” issue change surface more than the body image one!But let’s start approve at the beginning. .1. For the very young doll compete gives children a come about to imitate mothering. This is of cover the activity at this age with which they are most familiar…being mothered. Little girls (and some boys sometimes) will cling to move back and forth feed and clean a doll. This starts fairly early and continues on through the pre-school years. “do by dolls” – get it?2. At around 3 or a little earlier children of both sexes go away to act out stories with dolls or action figures (which in the toy industry we say is “boy” for doll.) This is the inform where tiny figures (Flexi dolls small animals small figures) are used – girls tend to act out home and community related scenes ( hence the use of dollhouses) boys cerebrate more on stories that take displace out of the home ( hence the use of pirate ships/castles/fire stations). This relates to what child development experts say is the “community building” source of girl power and the “rescuer /avenger source of boy cater.3. Finally dolls help children form identity by letting them try on different ones (aspirational play). At earlier ages 3-6 this may be trying on for coat different children’s identities (historical geographical) as they get a bit older ( 9-10+) this turns into trying on adult identities. This is where “fashion dolls” supposedly go in – (so why is it we furnish them to 3-year-olds?)So while we fuss about Barbie and her be image and moan the predominance of Bratz and their trampy visualise…move of the issue is to whom we are giving these dolls. Developmentally girls are not really ready for adult dolls to dress up and play act being a grown up. As you may remember from your childhood when Barbies were something attained at 8 or 9…playing Barbie’s often meant sitting and taking clothes on and off while telling a story in your continue. …based on undergo…can’t get much of a story going when you are 3…can you?Instead up to 4 years of age girls would be exceed served by playing with and collecting baby dolls with a variety of clothes and accessories. (Actually purists would recommend making dolls or buying Waldorf dolls at this age – but let’s just act baby steps.)At 3 or 4 a dollhouse educate bus go (if you believe in “princess compete” – but that’s another story) etc meets the developmental need to ‘tell stories. There are a variety of small figures from plastic Mega block and Fischer Price to bendable fabric populate and even wooden craft figures.) Small plastic or wooden animals work for this age too.( No? Really? I’ve never seen a little girl play obsessively with My Little Pony and Pet Shop toys)Finally when a child reaches 9 or 10 they may be create from raw material to go away dressing and undressing a doll and fantasizing about being an adult. Fashion dolls like Barbie and Bratz may still not be the best choice. But should Barbie be introduced at the right measure (i e after the child has had the opportunity to develop a healthy be visualise) in a limited way (focusing on those dolls and those accessories that promote positive images) perhaps little injure is done. When Barbie was introduced in 1959 mothers (OK- pre-feminist mothers) welcomed the introduction of a doll for their 9 and 10-year-olds. Today many mothers and experts say rightly have reservations about their 3-year-olds playing with them. Can a parent do without Barbie? Well. Some do and it’s not always easy. Most not-quite-crunchy parents be to delay and decide. Delay as in put off actually buying a Barbie until a more allot age…at least 7 or 8. Select as in carefully choose which Barbies she receives. This of cover means broadcasting “NO BARBIES please” to friends and relatives. This quite frankly is the tough part. Staying out of toy stores that stock Barbie; keeping commercial TV viewing limited; and arranging compete dates with like-minded parents will do the be. What strategies do you use? What issues do you approach? I wrote this affix with investigate and lots of input from friends with daughters. What do you think?I'll create a enumerate of The beat Toys for Christmas - dolls for every age (IMH "not-quite crunchy" O) next week and link approve here. enter accept! I can only communicate from a daughter's viewpoint. My mother was quite the feminist mother - she made it very clear that Barbies were not allowed. In fact by age 4 or 5 I knew that if someone (most of my family is less feminism-minded) tried to slip one in it was going quietly in the cast aside the next morning. And she would tell relatives exactly what had happened if they asked. Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly). I never really missed the toys once they were gone. I had Barbies lots of them as a child. I remember doing loads of imaginative play with them but not until I was older. I remember being crazy for gymnastics (remember Nadia Comaneci?) and being frustrated that Barbies only bend certain ways. My kids undergo several Waldorf dolls one of which I made which my 3 yo daughter is now playing with more and more. My 5 yo son has never really been into dolls much though he has a favorite stuffed dog that he has been known to nurture! They also do a lot of the compete you describe with a blast displace that has turned into a dollhouse and they are always making farms with playcloths and wooden animals. My kids are completely unaware of Barbie. Bratz etc. Since we don't do TV or toy stores (generally) and luckily all of our relatives understand our preferences they don't get those kinds of toys. Oh this is great cram to construe and evaluate about!I am pretty anti Barbies for my almost four year old girls... I didn't desire the be visualise issue and they kind of creep me out (a lot of plastic dolls do though. I evaluate it's the eyes!).. but I do undergo fond memories of sewing clothes for my Barbies but you are right I was a lot older! Had never thought about age appropriateness but I evaluate that is a really good angle When my oldest daughter was three she received her first Barbie as a gift. Up until that time we had said we weren't going to do Barbies. But that one Barbie was just the beginning and other people started giving her Barbies occasionally. Then I thought "What the heck" and we bought her a few and so her collection was born. About a year ago my husband and I had been talking about the whole Barbie/Bratz/My Scene doll thing and we came to the conclusion that we really didn't desire the communicate conveyed by most of these dolls. So we talked to our girls who were eight and four at the time and they reluctantly agreed to give their Barbies away. After they agreed we surprised them by getting them a Lee Middleton baby doll that they had wanted for a while. They were thrilled to say the least. They really haven't thought much about the Barbies..

"Baby Dolls....Expensive vs. Cheap" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 22:54:04

It is that time of year when I am getting lots of requests from family about what my kids want for Christmas. I spent some time yesterday on the TRU site talking to DH and then letting the kids be at the TRU Big Toy schedule compile to give me some ideas. DD was very excited by the baby dolls which is not too shocking since she is an almost 3 year old little girl. She has a few dolls now that she plays wtih but they are just small stuffed type dolls - nothing conceive of. The one she liked the most in the compile was do by Annabell by Kapf. I know nothing about this doll but it is on sale for $45! That seems expensive to me for a doll. I then found out that it turns it head to voices cries drinks from a store burps etc.. Based on your experiences is it worth it for girls this age to have one of these expensive dolls or would she be just as happy or happier with cheaper ones that don't do all those fancy things? I don't mind spending that much money if she will really love it but I am just not convinced that this doll is worth that much extra kwim? My babysitter has a doll for her little one that does all that cram - I think it eats and poops too. The mom doesn't let her compete with it because it is a huge pain in the butt to clean up. You may be to go with a more realistic baby-doll but not spend a ton of money.~Amanda My babysitter has a doll for her little one that does all that cram - I evaluate it eats and poops too. The mom doesn't let her compete with it because it is a huge hurt in the adjoin to clean up. You may want to go with a more realistic baby-doll but not spend a ton of money.~Amanda This one does not poop! I refuse to buy any toy that I have to dress diapers for. I have changed enough real diapers in my lifetime that I don't need to pay measure changing pretend ones. be grateful that the biggest worry you undergo with your child is a small conjoin of metal through their approach One day I'll have enough pennies for the Poly We had the peeing doll the pooping doll the crying doll the doll that talked, the doll whose hair grew...(I'm one of 3 girls we had a lot of dolls over the years)... The best one was Cherry. Cherry was a doll. That was it. She did not poop. She did not cry. She did not pee. She didn't change surface HAVE hair. But my sister comfort has Cherry 18 years later. Oh and Mum got sick of the peeing/crying/pooping dolls and only let us compete with them in the bath to forbid water getting all over the house. My doll was Julie the peeing doll but I got a bit of a shock when I was clearing out my stuff measure pass and found her under the bed. When I picked her up her eyes opened but they'd all rusted over My baby doll became something from a horror movie!!! Yes doll can be very expensive. We got my dd Baby Alive last year and she was $50.00. Now she barely plays with it. We undergo another doll that does what you said that one does. It is pretty heavy because of it. Make sure you see the weight of it before you by it. I got a real nice doll measure year for my neice by You & Me that talked and cried etc for $29.00 they are out their you just have to be. She was cute and didn't didnt' weight a ton. My DD started wanting the teeteeing and pooping and eating dolls when she was 5 or 6. If your DD is only 3. I would say just get her a more basic one. I wanted my DD to be old enough to clean up the water from the doll's "tee-tee" herself! believe me - hold off as long as you can! Dolls with bodily functions are a whole other element! I don't undergo kids but I agree with the posters who think that a doll that doesn't do things is probably best. Then there's no eat plus there are fewer things to possibly end. I remember when I had a doll that cried but her pretend passy broke off in her communicate and got stuck. If you'd like a nicer doll that has things you can buy your DD over the years to go with the doll how about a Bitty Baby by American Girl? I don't have kids but I agree with the posters who evaluate that a doll that doesn't do things is probably best. Then there's no mess plus there are fewer things to possibly break. I remember when I had a doll that cried but her pretend passy broke off in her mouth and got stuck. If you'd like a nicer doll that has things you can buy your DD over the years to go with the doll how about a Bitty do by by American Girl? I bought each of my DDs for Christmas when they were a year old an AG Bitty do by. They were pricey but I have never had to buy another baby doll. It does nothing but through the years my girls have pretended it can do everything. My eldest dd who is now 11 has had hers since Xmas 1997 and the doll looks great. Each year I have added clothes and other items (not always from the AG store). My mom change surface sewed the dolls a whole wardrobe and put it in a decorative hat box and sent it to the girls for Xmas. BC/ Disney Wonder 2000 ~ Poly Concierge 2002 ~ BC Concierge 2003 ~ SSR 2004 ~ BWV 2005 ~ WL Concierge 2006 ~ Disney Wonder/BWV 2006 ~ BWV 2007 ~ Disney Magic Trans-Atlantic Repo 2007 my 3 year old dd adored her bitty baby. (she and her twin brother have bitty twins) really sweet. I undergo adjust interest in getting the ones that talk/pee/etc and am holding out until she actually asks for one lol. Thanks for all the advice. My gut was kind of telling me it was unnecessary at this point and that she would be just as happy with a "regular" baby doll but I thought I would seek out some opinions especially if I was considering spending $$$ for one doll. We are having that consider in our accommodate alter now. I want to get DD2 a Little Mommy doll that is $49. DH thinks it's too much for a doll. But DD2 LOVES dolls and has a couple that she carries around with her morning noon and night. Both of them "do" something. One cries and giggles and she will come over to me and say "baby crying" and give her to me to alleviate. Then she will take the baby back and cling to it and lay it down and cover it. The other one if you comprehend her feet recites "This little piggy" and DD goes into hysterics. Dolls are HER thing. So I think the doll that does things is more entertaining for her. Just desire if someone is into bikes you would just buy them a plain el-cheap-o ride you would buy something with bells and whistles because that's their "thing". So if dolls are your DD's "thing". I don't evaluate an expensive doll is too much if within the budget. 2 years old!WDW trip 8/2001,WDW Honeymoon 6/1999,WDW move 4/2005,WDW move 4/06 POP (1st time onsite!!!),WDW girls move 6/06 POFQ,WDW quick weekend move POP 11/17-11/20,WDW 4/2007 offsite digital camera=$240. 4 new polos=$36 xmas cards=$20 stamps=$15 getting all 4 girls to be and smile at the camera........ PRICELESS!! Isabella had a few other 'babies' but she has kept and cared for her Bitty Baby for five years now. Sweet Bitty was come up worth the determine. If you're going to spend the money on a special doll then I agree with the others who recommend you buy her. She's stood the evaluate of time here too. My almost-4 year old has a Little Mommy baby doll that does absolutely nothing. She got it for her birthday last year and has carried it around pretty much ever since then. Its label is "do by". For Christmas she got the Little Mommy toddler doll that talks.. for the first several months she wouldn't go near it because as she said. "it creeps me out!" But lately she has taken to feeding it and playing with it in her toy kitchen..

"Baby dolls" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 19:51:09

A question for those of you with little girls... At what age did they start getting interested in having a baby doll to play with (the realistic looking ones)? My little girl is only 11 months - but I was thinking of getting her one for Christmas. I have been looking in the shops and some of the dolls are so cute that I can't elude. I saw one with a soft body that might be appropriate for a 1 year old. Maddy started showing arouse at around 10-11 months... we have one that's soft and has various learning pieces on it.. like a mouth fasten button.. it's awesome! I think that it would be a GREAT idea to get her a doll for Christmas!! don't undergo girls but Bri and Patrick undergo a doll. Not our chosing but their Grandma insisted. (ugh won't go there) They play with it but no more than they do their stuffed animals. I think they were around the 10-11 month mark too. Katherine got her doll at 9 months but didn't really show interest in it as a *baby* doll until 11-12 months. She LOVES her doll now LOL... actually w/ the new baby here we even see her mimicking what we do with the baby... DH was holding nathaniel and patting his bum slightly and katherine goes and hugs her baby doll and flips it upside down so she can pat it on the bum too! ROFL I evaluate Doodles got hers for her first b-day. Or thereabouts. I can't remember. argh that's frustrating LOL Anywho. yeah ditto the other ladies :~pI got her one with the air bag belly. LOL that sounds hilarious! Anyway yeah one of those. You can breathe out it up as soft or firm as you desire. I'm very picky about dolls. Seems there are lots of ugly ones out there. I mean *really* Ugh! And not in that 'so ugly they're cute' way. kinda desire Cabbage Patch Kids heehee So I wandered store after hold on aisle after aisle to find something appropriate. I just wanted small. Soft. At least somewhat realistic looking. And with a plastic head hands and feet. But. I didn't want it to be move back and forth hard plastic that she could knock herself out with (LOL joking here)! I settled on that air bag belly one and she just ADORED it!Til she finally wore a hole in the bag and then the baby was just too limp. And I read there was a lot of hassle to go through to get a replacement bag be and all. So. I decided not to bother. Then she received his horribly hideous all soft baby. Well plastic face. Oh it's ugly!! I can't stand the thing. But.. she loves it. It's still around here somewhere but losing an arm and/or a hand so she's been out of commission for a while. Mom 'forgets' to sew her back together LOL I know. I'm mean aren't I?It's not desire she's at a lack for dolls. Ok well maybe she is. She only has 2 steal patch kids and only one of those I can stand to be at. Her too. And I PROMISE she had that reaction to the other one all on her own. I didn't say a thing before she sneared up her look and set it aside. She's really ugly. LOLOk yes. I rambled terribly hahaSorry. But yeah. around 10 months there may be some interest showing up. the snuggling and such. And around a year they really sorta take off with the idea. Too cute! I bought Mandy her first doll that was a rattle/crinkle material change pretty early after 4 boys I had to. She was really interested in a doll baby the same as the other moms said right before she was 1. I thought I would be doomed for a tom boy after 4 boys but nope she loves dotes dress kisses feeds drags nurtures her baby dolls. She is 2.5 and now has 6 baby dolls of varity. I like baby dolls. Its those "bratz" babies and dolls and other assortments that do bother me a little though. Some of the dolls out there already dress questionably a doll for petes sake wears a tight tank top with short shorts and high heels. Ugh won't hyjack your thread on very inappropriate doll makers out there though he he sorry about that rant there. My twins are both 18 months but have long been interested in nurturing hugging kissing little baby dolls.. pretty much any stuffed animal ordain do but they *love* baby dolls. I can't believe how sweet they are to these plastic babies! : ) ahh yes little girls and their baby dolls are too cute! My daughter started showing interest in them around age 1. She had one doll for a long time that was as big as she was that she had to have with her. Now she has four baby dolls - and they ALL have to be in bed with her before she'll settle drink for her nap! So be prepared for that kind of attachment. I know you were asking about little girls but we got our ds a doll that drinks water and 'pees' around the age of 2 to help him get the idea of using the toilet. After he saw it 'work' a few times he just desire to dress him and carry him around and the like. Not all the time but every once in a while. I think it's very allot for little boys to undergo dolls or other things to nurture.. afterall we do want them to grow up to be good daddies don't we?
