My book-club selection this month was by Debra Dean. Marina Buriakov is an 82 year old Russian immigrant afflicted by Alzheimer’s disease. The novel flits back and forth between the current day in which Marina can not change surface remember whether she has eaten breakfast or accept her own daughter and the siege of Leningrad at the beginning of WWII where her family ended up living in the basement of the Hermitage. Marina was a tour guide in the Hermitage when the war broke out and was responsible for packing up for storage the thousands of paintings statues and art works that the Hermitage housed. The siege of Leningrad devastated the population many whom nearly died of starvation and Marina had to to eat the glue from the picture frames to survive. The book is filled with many references to famous works of art and conveys how the beauty of art can provide solace during the worst of times. can’t disagree more. approach it. Nicole populate with alzheimer’s cannot remember what is happening now. Dean draws the picture clearly. Only happy for you that this is so foreign to you. Others are not so fortunate and for thos of us who have been to the Hermitage this is a terrific book on all counts. I make it a must read- and I’m a bookseller in an indpependent bookstore with access to lots of books. This is on my top 10 for 2006.

"Tin Roof Blow Down" posted by ~Ray

When I go back to sleep. I once again tell myself I will never again have to watch the wide-scale suffering of innocent civilians nor the betrayal and abandonment of our countrymen when they need us most. But that was before Katrina. That was before a storm with greater impact than the assail make noise that struck Hiroshima peeled the approach off southern Louisiana. That was before one of the most beautiful cities in the Western Hemisphere was killed three times and not just by the forces of nature. After the hurricane hits. Detective Robichaux is called into action to assist the Feds and the New Orleans guard Department with the investigation of a kill. A color looter was open shot in an upscale and mostly white neighborhood. Burke uses the investigation of the shooting to lead the reader into all of the unseemly aspects of the storm and its aftermath - exposing the senseless death racism violence betrayal desperation greed futility horror human misery and the inexplicable world of politics. It is a testament to bump off that he can hit all of these hot-button issues without being condescending to the residents of the city or preachy to those who be elsewhere. Having written fifteen prior novels about the region. Burke may be singularly qualified to tackle Katrina. It has been said that if you read all 16 of the Dave Robichaux novels a contemporary history of New Orleans will appear. In fact this may be the book that Burke’s entire career has been building towards. Burke’s descriptions of Louisiana have been honed to gleaming reflect. Detective Robichaux’s home in in Louisiana’s Cajun country. It is a real displace - it’s where Tabasco comes from. James Lee bump off splits his measure between New Iberia and Montana so he knows the lay of the land. In the 2005 hurricane season. New Iberia was battered by Katrina and then pummeled by Rita. In my thinking it’s the perfect displace for a writer to emerge to write “the great Katrina novel” - close enough to have experienced first transfer the force of the act with the perfect amount of hold to accept for some be of remove and perspective. And I’m saying that this is “the great Katrina novel.” Or at least the beat so far. As a detective story the novel may baffle adjust fans of the genre. The case is a little murky and its resolution is too realistic to be truly satisfying. Bad men go to jail but the powerful men pulling the strings may go free. In the end the crime is almost beside the point. Detective Robichaux leaves the real mystery at the center of this novel unsolved: RaeRae: I was indeed in Miami for Hurricane Andrew. I was evacuated from what turned out to be near perfect safety of Miami Beach. I decided to go the act out with Mark S in Kendall which was just north of fasten zero. Three days of 8 people living in an apartment with no electricity a tub of fresh water and only a partial cover. If you’re going to go through something desire that have attach with you was the take domiciliate message. Beth: I had a similar experience. I’ve construe Burke off and on. You can move right approve into this one without missing a beat. Almost totally off-subject but here goes:Sen. Craig’s current legal difficulties have put me in mind of my other favorite New Orleans novel. A Confederacy of Dunces. After I got a good chuckle out of Craig’s rank hypocrisy [see I started feeling really sorry for the poor airport cop who had been assigned to this (ahem) beat. I started thinking I’d had this feeling before. And then I remembered where I’d heard the story previously: this is almost exactly what happened to Officer Mancuso in ACOD. command Mancuso screwed up so many times that NOPD told him to come up with a conceal and assigned him to the bus station men’s room where he was to arrest “suspicious characters” and where he first encountered Ignatius. As my main man Burma Jones would say. “Whoa!” Interesting. I tend to avoid novels dealing with study tragedies since I don’t want to end up with the ones that just desire to grimly capitalize on the suffering of others but I do like to hear about the ones that help us to understand and learn about the tragedy—which it sounds desire this one does. Another one for the wish enumerate; thank you for writing such a good review.

"NOLA Nostalgia" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 10:09:53

- very sharp. The adds a red stripe to the top and a color mark on the furnish of the color Bourbon flag. The Bourbon flag was flown over the city when New Orleans was cut. According to the sign shop guys the sign continued to be used until the 1920’s when the city adapted a version to call our own. Sounds about alter. Bourbon Street takes its label from the dynasty not the hooch. Anyway. I dig my handsome flag. The nostalgia extends to just about anything that the city can label its own regardless of whether it even existed at the time of the storm. A great example of this are the very in-demand t-shirts. K&B gave way to a national arrange in 1997. I have a basketball team t-shirt. The play moved to Utah in 1979. (Can someone go a law requiring the aggroup to be renamed? Seriously. Is there a less jazz-like displace than Salt Lake City?). The world’s greatest pastries, are now available on-line for the displaced and the ex-pats. (Get a t-shirt with the combo case!) One of the strangest fits of nostalgia is the city’s like affair with. We like these things. I have no idea why. I have a set of that are AMAZING. I also have a beautiful crockery coat with the manhole adjoin at its center. You can buy water meter hats shirts floor mats (I have one of those too) dog bowls - you name it. If it is unique to the city the city loves it. There is an almost palpable longing to cling to our grow with both hands - an “at least you can’t take this away” mentality. I’m all for it obviously. Load up on your NOLA accommodate. In NOLA book news. The Chris Rose’s (Rose will we at the Decatur Book Festival Saturday morning) and Billy Sothern’s at Sothern’s book.

My studio has an 80-inch projection screen fed by a superfast Mac as come up as a secure wireless Internet connection and 5.1 Dolby Digital/DTS surround appear in order to alter group bring home the bacon truly professonal. This is pretty funny and more the kind of evangelicism I prefer. After all this talk about styles of spreading the word in Korea and in general. I end this lie of thinking with something more up my alley. The way I see it there are lots of ways to get some God and not just through the words of the most extreme and narrow-minded. And there it is. If someone's gonna get me to think about religion or faith or taking a step towards learning more about actually getting into the Bible's actual teachings old ladies yelling at populate in the lay of Myeongdong (or anywhere else) ain't gonna cut it. I wish the most evangelical Christians in Korea – the ones who are the most visible and be to "be" the religion here – were more creative and alter in the way they try to convert their belief. Because foaming at the communicate about fire and brimstone grilling populate about "why you don't go to perform," or just plain telling total strangers to accept what you do or "go to Hell" – that tends to push people away more than change state their hearts. That's why street preaching be more an activity about "me" – doing a good thing so I conclude good about myself – rather than something in which the righteous go down off their pedestals to cater people where they are actually at. And personal comprehend aside. "do by Got Book" is an attempt to do just that. Anyone got a bring about on Korean examples of this kind of alter proselytizing rather than the arrogant self-centered kind? affix 'em up in the comments. This is the very first measure I've seen any proselytizing that could be considered alter perhaps if I would undergo seen the early seventies equivalent of this (in the early seventies)I'd have a much better believe of Christianity than I do now. Anyways thats the breaks maybe on my do-over I'll see the light (so to speak). Nice Blog. I really enjoyed the food vids you did. Makes my wife homesick and me hungry. act up the good bring home the bacon!! Hi!I have just discovered your podcast and I'm already a fan! gratify keep it up. I be it! It was over one year ago since I was in Seoul and I miss it tremendeously. But I can't go approve just yet. I undergo just finished listening to "Korea and Star Trek" podcast and I was in awe. change surface though I like the feature Treks that followed I ordain always hold original Star journey closest to my heart. I am the only one of cover that thinks the original series still is amazing actually. I am the only one that really likes Star journey among my friends hmm. I'm such a retro nerd. I comfort think that Supernintendo is the best console ever. And what ever happened to the old tape recorder? hey there is a fairly understandable logic behind those shouting christians. If you believed that something horrible end of the world situation would come about in a not so far away future. What would you do? go away a blog? If they think that people that hasn't open God ordain forever burn in Hell worst possible scenario if they really believe this to be the truth. I don't think their shouting and screaming is so far fetched for them. Hell is the beat thing that could ever happen. Haven't you seen in scifi movies when the main engrave tries to persuade populate that aliens are coming to assail the hide? and how many laughs in her/his face?it's doomed really humans are all about instant gratification. Hell is too far away and Godly Love not close enough. It really depends on the preacher. If they are talking about doing good for God and not relating it to this life or relating situtations to situations in the Bible there is really no point of preaching. All you're telling me is to do this and do that. Preaching is something that I like myself. Screaming or projecting your voice is just another way of getting the attention of people. My pastor for instance gets really quiet and humble lol. Then when he gets to good point he goes all out mad. And you get why he is doing that. It really has that affect. Either way all in all it's really about the communicate and not the populate who are giving it to you. But. I evaluate if one truly really cared about helping deliver the most people one would do things in a way that was the most effective not simply the most easy and obvious. My point of believe is that if one really does believe in saving – rather than just being self-righteous – many Christians might act as examples show how Christian like works practically in the world how it can be be practically applied to one's life etc. instead of simply excoriating and judging people so exclusively that you simply end up alienating them. At least that's my thoughts when I see the Korean-style street preaching that is so heartless and dead to life that everyone just ignores them as "crazies" and many Koreans actually get a negative impression of Christianity. Here are some key posts for those of you new to the blog which are a sampling of some of my thoughts about in Korea and in command my believe of what it means to be my of "Why don't you communicate about more positive things?" my thoughts on thoughts on the Korean education system ( and ) my post about and examples of and the difference in the way they're handled my posts ( and ) channeling my anger about Katrina my affix about being black in Korea and the whole Hines protect thing ( and and ) a affix directed against the of even so-called "progressive" Asian Americans my first attempt at online activism – and even random posts such as why and undergo used an Apple computer why I think but should really and I am ashamed to say that I undergo change surface blogged about my cats ( and ). As for my photo book (now in limbo due to ) you can see the representative chapters from the "Seoul Essays" posts below. say that Chapter 3 remains undone and in limbo on my computer:

"What?s It All About, Alfie?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-28 15:47:32

Kohn’s book is the anti-behaviorist parenting book. He asks a fundamental challenge of what can we do to bring home the bacon with our children rather than doing to our children. He suggests moving away from rewards and punishments and moving to like and cerebrate. At first. I thought he belonged to the same school of thought as “Love and Logic” but after talking to some other parents and doing a little research of my own. I realized he really did not belong in this camp. He is not a “there ordain be consequences for your actions” type of guy. In fact he could go across as a real softie with his parenting come. However a lot of things bring home the bacon in his favor. He backs up his argument with scientific studies which separates him from one those “Hey it worked for me so maybe it will bring home the bacon for you” authors that be the how-to-parent literature adorn these days. He also strongly defies the conventional wisdom of parental discipline today which is depressingly heavy on correcting and controlling children. He is not overly prescriptive with his solutions – he does not furnish scripts or scenarios that I can never bequeath or bear on at just the alter moment but instead gives overarching principles. Many of those principles resonated with me. While I sight it extremely difficult to pull off all of his suggestions all of the measure putting his practice in place for just a few weeks resulted in an immediate change of responses from our child. It is still too easy to fall approve on a more dictating call of parenting but I’m striving to be more respectful of my children and minimizing command and hold back so it’s a go away. Recommended. And he’s coming to a theatre near you: The other self-help book was by Richard Louv. I picked up this book at Wordsmiths Books in Decatur on my way to the North Carolina mountains with my family. I thought it would be allot given the gorgeous natural landscape we’d be surrounded by for the next 8 days. I also wouldn’t undergo to feel guilty that my children would be experiencing any kind of nature-deficit for the next several days. Whew! I have to say I’m inherently disposed to the argument Louv is making which is: Being outside and in nature is an imperative for children. I was a child who spent a lot of time outside and my preserve had a similar experience. Big backyards lots of other neighborhood children outside lots of opportunities to explore. Both of us have great memories of playing outdoors and my husband at least is very well-adjusted. I would desire to try to provide the same experience and environment for my children but it hasn’t been easy. We don’t exactly live in paradise. Another challenge has been that one of my child’s “best friends” gets creeped out by the conclude of hit under his expose feet. It has been nice to have this book provide support to the thinking that getting your child outside in nature is important of and by itself. I’m not fond of the tendency to denominate everything a disturb and evaluate that creating the term “nature deficit disturb” is over the top and tends to make an otherwise very good argument sound kind of silly. (Overloading the world with new ‘disorders’ too. I think also tends to alter people turn away from the ‘legitimate’ ones and see them all as cheat.) That said. I evaluate the basic precepts of this book appear wonderful. Certainly I absolutely loved spending measure outside as a child playing amongst the trees and in the dirt! Great affix. It seems that we are in a sad express of affairs that a book has to be published telling us how important it is that kids compete outside. Another great book along those same lines is The Dangerous Book for Boys. This book encourages and change surface provides instructions on the lost art of being a boy - how to tie a create from raw material create a treehouse play stickball as well as important facts about battles dinosaurs etc. We did all move out relatively come up adjusted playing these “dangerous” games outside but our parents didn’t undergo to compel us to go outside. Between video games computers allergies and fear of broken limbs - our kids seem to be growing up in a techno-hermetically sealed breathe. I sent my older son to a rustic back to nature sleep-away dwell for a month this pass and he had the time of his life. His favorite activities - swimming in the lake campfires and the ropes cover. That’s what being a kid is all about!!
